The pictures of social life that an excellent literary work presents to us must be richer, more concrete and true than the books of politics, history and philosophy can provide. As Marx put it when he commented on those great critique realists in the 19th century: Their “political and social truths revealed to the world reveal more than professional politicians, political commentators and moralists . ”Hardy, a critical British realist in the late 19th century, is one such writer. What is revealed in his masterpiece, Tess of the Tiber, is the true picture of British social life in that era.
