System on chip is the dream of all engineers. The advent of the first programmable device (PAL) took the first step towards this dream. When higher-density, larger FPGAs come out, it seems like dreams have come true. However, with the increasing demand for higher frequencies in the market, FPGAs with general-purpose architectures have failed to provide the required performance and ASICs now appear to be the only solution available. However, there is a new generation of products known as built-in standard module chips (ESPs) that have the performance of ASICs and the flexibility of FPGAs.
