寓言创作和任何文学艺术作品的创作一样,都离不开生活。许多优秀的寓言本来就是由生活事件的触发而创作成的。这里有三种情况。第一种情况是,生活事件本身可以直接成为寓言创作的素材,作者以此为基础,挖掘事件所蕴含的哲理,便能创作出一篇成功的寓言。我国古代寓言中不乏以历史故事作为寓言题材的例子,因为正如美国小说家霍桑所说的:“每一个惊人的事件都有它自己的寓意。”如秦末发生的“指鹿为马”的事件,既是历史,又能改写为寓言。在司马迁的《史记·秦始皇本纪》中是这么记载的:
Fable creation is the same as creation of any literary and artistic work, which can not be separated from life. Many good fables were originally created by the triggering of life events. There are three situations here. In the first case, the life event itself can directly become the material of fable creation. Based on this, the author can tap into the philosophy contained in the event and create a successful allegory.
