“GPS World”, August 2014 issue On the 27th of May 2014, the fourth Galileo orbiting validation (IOV) satellite suddenly failed and stopped broadcasting E1 and one of the other 2 navigation signals. Ground staff was forced to suspend the operation of the entire satellite. So far, the cause of the malfunction has not yet been identified, presumably due to the failure of the components (including the output multiplexer, cables and antennas) near the solid-state power amplifier. If this speculation proves to be true, the ground operator may not be able to repair the problem, and the failed satellite will also be totally ineffective. Officials at the European Space Agency (ESA) have said they will resume the operation of the fourth “Galileo” satellite in July to facilitate the follow-up investigation of the failure. However, as of now, no further information has been given by the European Space Agency.
