哈尔扎位于青海茫崖镇(旧址)西南45公里处。属于东昆仑西段祁漫塔格山北麓的低山区。1955年,张文堂等在哈尔扎沟口附近的灰绿色碎屑岩灰岩中,首次采获腕足化石:Cyrtospirifer sp.,Productella sp.及三叶虫:Proetus sP.确定为晚泥盆世。1959年,朱夏将上述地层称之为哈尔扎群。1958年,西北地质局石油普查大队在哈尔扎沟口剖面的中部采得腕足:Cyrtospirifer sinensis(Gra bau),植物:Leptophloeum rhombicumDawson。1969—1970年,青海地质局第一区调队在哈尔扎东侧山脊于相当层位中采到腕足:Cyrtospirifer sinensic(Grabau),C,chaoi(Grabau),Tenticospirifersp.及瓣鳃。
