开阳磷矿为浅海相沉积磷块岩矿床,量大质优。已探明储量3亿多吨。P_2O_5含量平均>34%,MgO含量<1%,R_2PO_3含量<3%。该种矿石是加工制造高浓度复合肥的优质原料。但是,由于开采工艺不完善,在开采中混入大量废石,采出品位降低,有害杂质含量增高,致使优质资源不能优用。 矿体以稳定层状产出,倾角30~40°,厚度5~7米,属中厚缓倾斜矿体。其节理、小构造较发育。直接顶板不稳固。在过去的生产中曾先后试验使用过分层崩落法、分段崩落法、水平分层充填法、杆柱房柱法和中深孔房柱法,但效果都不理想。目前普遍使用有底柱沿走向端部退采分段空场法和无底柱沿走向退采或沿进路退采的分段空场法。
