The oil and gas industry is one of the major users of low alloy high strength steel and microalloyed steel. Every year, the investment in petroleum pipes (oil well pipes and oil and gas pipelines) accounts for about 1/5 of the total investment in the oil industry. In the total amount of steel used in the oil industry, oil well pipe accounts for more than 40%. From 1949 to 1993, China’s onshore oil industry had a total of 140,000 wells drilled with a footage of 2.396 × 10 ~ 8m, consuming 1.28 × 10 ~ 7t of oil well pipe. Its imports accounted for 90% of the total consumption and shared a total of 7.5 billion U.S. dollars of foreign exchange.
