Thanks to the recent progress in institutional restructuring, Air France plans to cut off the “umbilical cord” between it and the French government on which it depends for less than two years. Christian Airline, chairman of the French airline group, hopes that Air France, suffering from losses, can achieve a break-even at least by June 1997. He said that this is also a necessary prerequisite for the company to begin the privatization process in late 1997 or early 1998. Brown said: “Because we have started the reconstruction of the company’s basic structure, we have every reason to be optimistic.”
