1994年6月下旬,在北京肿瘤防治研究所新建成的医院大楼,以及中国医学科学院肿瘤研究所肿瘤医院、综合性的新华红十字医院与精神病专业的安定医院,一个叫约翰·费特的美国人和妻子与来自美国各地及日本的近20名志愿者,同北京抗癌乐园(群众组织)的百余名康复患者以及住院的数百名各科病人与医院职工一同作画。约翰·费特热心为医院作画,不仅使那里单一的白色环境增添了色彩,而且使濒临绝境的生命出现了奇迹。从1975年以来,他已在世界89个国家为300多家医院作画7500幅。这种独到的疗法与积极的、关怀的态度,使无数住院病人感到安慰与希望。小女孩的一句话,竟改变了他的一生费特今年54岁,1963年大学毕业取得广告学学位,以后就在家乡《科学的亚特兰大》杂志担任广告执行人。1975年一个朋友患病住院,他常前去看望。“那里的墙壁、大厅、病房都是单调乏味的,没有色彩、没有生命、也没有吸引力,待久了还会感到压抑。”于是他携带画笔、颜料,征得医院同意后,开始在那里绘制壁画。有一次他刚动笔,一个严重烧伤的4岁女孩来到他跟前说:“我想画画。”他不能说不。而这,竟改变了他的一生。为了把艺术送到医院、送给那些对艺术最需要的病人们,连他那担任小学教师的妻子和两个儿子的生活也都发生了变化。
