In China, as more and more old houses carrying heavy history and ancient villages were ashes as they were destroyed in the modern city-building movement, countless medieval castles in Western Europe glow with cold light under the warm spring sun. In Sydney, however, the fate of the old building is different. It is a different kind of concern: there are a group of Sydney architects who have turned their backs on historical buildings and opened up to show people one after another. They believe that all buildings are a product of society and that all history is worthy of respect. They argue that our reconstruction and re-use of historic buildings should highlight our characteristics of the times.
