With this fast developing speed, however, the industry, as a whole, is plagued by the lack of transportation capacity. According to statistics, the total air transportation capacity is running at 5,000 tons each day which will not at all meet the fast growing demand. Meanwhile, China will soon open its air logistics market to foreign companies under the obligations to WTO. So far, more than 90 foreign logistics companies, including UPS, FedEx, TNT and DHL, have pronounced their existence in China to gain market share against local companies. Facing fiercer competition from foreign rivals, Chinese air logistics companies are fighting back by way of restructuring and acquisition. This March, Sinotrans Air Transportation Development Co., one of Chinas largest air logistics agencies, announced that it had acquired a stake in Sichuan Airlines Corp., Ltd. to build a new comprehensive platform to compete with foreign giants. The acquisition provides a totally new way for Chinese air logistics industry to compete with foreign companies, although this new model still has a long way to go.
