US Science News, Vol. 121, No. 8 (1982) reports that connective tissue is one of the components of the body and acts as a barrier to the movement of normal cells. However, during cancer metastasis, cells leave the primary tumor tissue and invade the distant organs through the barrier. Lance ALiatta of the National Cancer Institute describes specific organisms that connect cancer cells to the connective tissue barrier that penetrates the basement membrane (the structure that separates the cell layers) and the interstitial matrix (the material between cells in the tissue). Chemical interactions. Letah emphasized that “transfer is an active violation, not a passive cell shedding from the tumor.”
