周瘦鹃精通外语,避免了时人随意翻译的弊病;熟悉欧美小说,对所译作品的选择具有专业眼光。他运用整体忠实而适度归化的翻译策略,使译作呈现出不同于“五四”翻译小说的才子笔墨。无论用文言,还是白话,其译文总是清新流畅,雅俗共赏,颇能引起民初读者的“兴味”。他大量翻译“哀情”小说乃是其主体精神与时代风尚双重建构的结果。若从“融才子笔墨与专业眼光为一体”的角度考察,他已经超越林纾、包天笑等译界前辈。在“新文学革命”前夕,他便开始更多地采用直译,使其译作呈现出一种与时俱进的特色。
