Like the rest of the world’s major airports, the Paris airport is also operating under the blow from the downturn in the civil aviation industry that started in early 2001. These strikes include the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Arab-Iraq war and the SARS virus epidemic. Rayne J. Franklin here summarizes the airport’s development and future plans of development prior to the setback. After the French liberation in 1944, the main task of the new government established by General de Gaulle was to re-establish the transport structure of the country. Coalition bombing and the joint sabotage by the French resistance group have dealt a serious blow to France’s road, rail and air transport. Particularly affected were the Le Bourget Airport, located just outside Paris before the war. In August 1944, the airport was awarded the A-54 logo for the ADSL system and was handed over to the United Kingdom for control.
