On November 12, 2003, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage held a briefing on the work of the Chinese and foreign regional archaeological surveys in Beijing. When one of the authors, on behalf of the Regional Archaeological Investigation Task Force of the China-US Huan River Basin, reported the concept of a “borderline effect” against a cultural phenomenon, it aroused the interest of the participants. We are greatly benefited from the immediate guidance given by Mr. Zhang Zhongpei to the issues covered by this concept.
