For two decades, people have undergone a revolution in their understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the processes of life, and have revolutionized the ability to manipulate these mechanisms on demand. Someone called this newly discovered knowledge and ability not strictly “biotechnology.” This review seeks to examine the impact of biotechnology on plant protection. Although many of the basic principles of plant biotechnology have a potential impact on plant protection (eg, restrictions on fragment polymorphism, etc.), this article discusses the issues that have a direct impact in this area.
