Objective To investigate the relationship between changes of DNA aneuploidy and RNA content and prognosis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods Paraffin-embedded specimens of 62 patients were studied by flow cytometry. Results The DNA aneuploidy was 78.1% (25/32) in patients who survived more than 5 years after surgery, and the RNA content was 20.53±4.21. In the six months after the death, the DNA of the dead was 93.3% (28/30), and the RNA content was 24.84±6.35. There was a significant difference between the two groups. DNA aneuploidy and RNA content are associated with stage, degree of malignancy, and lymph node metastasis. Conclusion DNA and RNA measurement is an important indicator to determine the stage, degree of malignancy, lymph node metastasis and prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
