East Asia has drawn wide attention from economists for its rapidly growing international production network. This paper studies the causes of East Asian production networks from the perspective of infrastructure construction and service contact costs. The authors expanded the Limao and Venables infrastructure indices and used UN trade statistics panel data to build an augmented gravitation model that distinguishes between components and final product trade, with a detailed review and quantification of the impact of service-linked costs. The results show that the construction of infrastructure and the reduction of service cost have played a significant role in promoting the establishment of a vertical division of labor in East Asia. In the sense of promoting exports, infrastructure construction will help promote China’s deepening participation in the system of division of labor in the region and will have a positive effect on the restoration of trade growth in the future.
