Two authors, Strangers in a Lonking Society and Tightening Screws, reveal the social problems of the time in which they were exposed by describing their experience of dealing with ghosts and their respective religious beliefs. The two greatest similarities between the two novels are the similarity of their themes and the very idea of good and evil of religion that links the two works together. Through reading and analyzing, I emphasize that although the writings of Pu Song-ling, a writer of ancient China, and Henry James, a novelist of modern times in the United States, are very similar in their writing, they all point their speeches at the moment to the serious problems existing in their respective societies. However, , Pu Songling emphasizes the concept of karma for goodness and decency in Buddhism. Henry James emphasizes the distinction between nature and man, the confrontation between man and nature, and the rebellion against social tradition.
