近几年,日本先后研制了几种自走式采伐机。这些采伐机均为液压剪式。其最大缺点是锯口劈裂严重,木材损失很大。尽管多次组织技术力量改进,但劈裂问题至今尚未解决。于是,开始研究不同于液压剪式的新型采伐装置。1976年研制成功“钻式伐木机”,由沼田营林署进行现场生产试验,考察其作业性能、安全性能及需改进之点。试验报告如下:
