American critic Clement Greenberg discussed the relationship between modern sculpture and painting in his article Modernism Sculpture and Its Painters (1952). He believes that the source of modernist sculpture has been developed from painting. Sculpture history is one of Greenberg’s debates on new sculptures, and the Cubist collage is the beginning of this new sculpture that Greenberg believes. Greenberg also devoted Picasso, for example, to thinking that he created a new kind of sculpture tradition and variety through “collage”, which was later called “constitution.” However, because Picasso has always been famous as a master of painting, his achievements in sculpture are seldom systematically studied.
