Following the development of a worm mill for grinding clay, mica, talc and other ceramic raw materials, the US Bureau of Mines has recently made improvements to develop a worm wheel mill for the preparation of high purity, ultra-fine SiC powder and other high-grade ceramic powders. In an improved mill, the metal impurities in the product are separated by a certain configuration, using ultra high molecular weight polyethylene throughout the exterior. There is no media contamination problem because milling of a worm wheel mill is a self-grinding process - with large abrasive particles or balls that have the same composition as the abrasive material.
