不管你怎样使用与保管,只要钢材与空气、水和酸碱等相接触,它就要发生或快或慢的生锈与腐蚀现象。据试验,放置在露天的钢材,一个月,一吨钢材能腐蚀掉二公斤多,四个月,就能腐蚀掉15公斤。有人作过统计,世界上因腐蚀而损失的钢铁,约占每年生产量的40%。有些机器因部分的腐蚀,以至造成整个机器的报废,这种情形在航空与船舶方面造成的损失更是惊人。钢材为什么会腐蚀呢?简单的说,就是钢材受到水、空气、酸、碱等周围的介质作用后起了化学变化,把金属变成了另一种新物质。我们把钢材发生这种化学变化而遭到破坏的过程叫做腐蚀。
