《柏林童年》与一般回忆录不同之处是它在回忆录这种文学样式中,以特有的意象展示、审美地实施着作为现代思想主潮之一的社会批判。这种审美化的社会批判,一方面刷新了回忆录这种文学样式的社会功能,另一方面也原创地使现代性批判获得了一种特有的审美形态,即借助于意象展示而不是概念阐释。这样的批判不仅是《柏林童年》的深层题旨,也是本雅明一生为之奋斗的目标,正是这种批判使他成了现代批判理论的先驱之一。
The difference between the “childhood of Berlin” and the general memoirs is that in the literary style of memoir, it displays with unique images and aesthetically implements the social critique which is one of the main trends of modern thought. This kind of aesthetic social criticism, on the one hand, refreshes the social function of the literary style such as memoir, on the other hand, it also makes the critique of modernity obtain a unique aesthetic form by means of image display rather than conceptual interpretation. Such criticism is not only the deeper theme of “the childhood of Berlin,” but also the goal Benjamin strives for in his life. It is precisely such criticism that made him one of the pioneers of modern critical theory.
