晚清“谴责小说”被“礼拜六派”的言情小说取代,既是文学适应了报刊时代大众读者的阅读需求,也是通俗小说的娱乐性向政治小说的严肃性的挑战。从客观上看,清末民初出版业的发达和小说期刊的繁荣,使小说能够广泛、迅速地在大众读者群中流播。传播范围的扩大和传播速度的加快,拉近了文学与接受群体的距离,小说观念的世俗化成为历史的必然;从文学发展的自身规律看,娱乐消遣是小说与生俱来的本能意义,是小说的当行本色。维新派的政治小说观顺应了时代的要求,提高了小说的社会地位,但同时也以牺牲小说的本体特征为代价,在那个时代,小说并没有真正获得过独立价值。所以,当制约小说观念的政治因素被削弱之后,小说便要回到其本色特征上来。“鸳鸯蝴蝶派”期刊强调小说的娱乐、消遣功能,在一定程度上发展了小说的审美艺术特征。

The novelist view of political fiction conforms to the requirements of the times and improves the social status of the novel, but at the expense of the noumenon characteristics of the novel. In that era, the novel did not really gain independent value. Therefore, when the political factors that constrain the notion of novels have been weakened, the novel has to return to its true characteristics. “Yuanyang Hwa Diepai ” periodicals emphasize the entertainment and pastime functions of fiction, to a certain extent, developed the aesthetic artistic features of fiction.
