On the HL-1M tokamak, reproducible low-clutter ionization heating experiments were successfully performed at plasma densities greater than 4 × 10 ~ (13) cm ~ (-3). A model based on ionic Landau damping is presented to explain these experimental results. The main consideration is that the electric field perpendicular to the toroidal magnetic field of the ions heating the plasma in the plasma is much larger than the electric field parallel to the toroidal magnetic field of the heated electrons.
