“Nostromo” was praised by critics as Conrad’s most outstanding novel. The novel is famous for its grand scenes, numerous figures, unique narrative structures and the revelation of human nature. At the same time, the novel is also intricately complicated and profoundly difficult to understand. One of the important reasons why “Nostromo” is a great novel is its discussion of the state of human existence. In this novel, Conrad reveals the existence of man in the absurd world, the alienation experienced by man, and the existence of the individual and others in the perspective of existentialism. These existential factors have been comprehensively and deeply reflected in the novel. However, due to the lack of a solid and systematic theoretical foundation, previous studies on this novel failed to fully reflect these existentialist ideas. This article is closely linked with Existentialism in Nostromo and tries to use Sartre’s existentialism theory to interpret this novel.
