Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and its associated transmissible spongiform encephalopathy have no reliable, practical laboratory tests. The detection of 130 and 131 proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease seems to be a sensitive and specific marker, but their identification has not been successful because of their low concentration in cerebrospinal fluid. The authors hypothesized that both proteins were present in the brain, that 130 and 131 proteins in the normal human brain were detected, and some of their amino acids were sequenced and found to belong to the 14-3-3 brain protein family
