Objective To investigate the relationship between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum interleukin-2 (IL-2) levels and ALS disease progression in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Methods 52 patients with ALS (ALS group) and 31 patients with non-ALS (control group) were enrolled in this study. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect IL-2 levels in serum and CSF in both groups. Results The level of IL-2 in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of 1ALS group was significantly higher than that of control group (P <0.05). There was no correlation between IL-2 level of serum and CSF in 2ALS group (r = 0.041, P = 0.84). The level of IL-2 in cerebrospinal fluid of 3ALS group was positively correlated with disease progression rate. The correlation coefficient of cerebrospinal fluid IL-2 level and disease progression rate was statistically significant (r = 0.58, P = 0.002) There was no correlation between the level and the disease progression rate (r = 0.086, P = 0.545). Conclusions Cerebrospinal fluid IL-2 level has a positive correlation with the progression rate of ALS disease.
