India’s forest area of nearly 7,500 hectares, accounting for about 23% of land area. However, reports from recent years show that forest cover is actually less than 10% (Kamath, 1985), and most of the forest land is actually a wasteland requiring governance and afforestation. As a result, Indian forests are no longer able to meet the growing demand for timber from more than 200 of their wood-processing enterprises and to meet the needs of people, especially rural residents, for fodder wood and timber.
