Inverse multiplexing technology allows IT managers to seamlessly connect LANs to ATM wide area networks and to expand WAN bandwidth by adding T-1 circuits. Although ATM network bandwidth is as high as 155 Mbps, many companies only need a fraction of it. As a result, the ATM Forum has two low-speed interfaces: a T-1 connection of 1.544 Mbps and a T-3 connection of 45 Mbps. Instead of using T-3 connections directly (at 10 times the cost of a T-1 connection), the most economical way for businesses to use WAN and ATM technologies with bandwidths above 1.544Mbps is bandwidth reuse. Traditionally, multiple channels of data were multiplexed within a single channel, and data can now be transmitted in multiple channels by inverse multiplexing.
