Strickland, the protagonist of the Moon and the Sixpence, is an artist who strives to get rid of worldly grief and clings to freedom in order to realize his self-worth. And another artist in the work, Stelv, could not and did not want to get out of the secular world and eventually became mediocre. The former represents the ideal of pursuing art and freedom, and the latter has fallen victim to Western material civilization in stark contrast to the former. By comparing the two painters, this article explores the social causes of the different outcomes of the two. It shows the struggle between spiritual freedom and social bondage under the weight of materialism, and expresses the desire and cry of society and art for spiritual freedom.
