余甘又名油甘,系大戟科叶下珠属落叶小乔木或灌木。株高1~3米,粗生易长(根部可萌生新植株)。分布于我国粤、桂、川、滇、黔、闽等省(区),适生于疏松下或山坡向阳处,多为野生。 余甘果实营养丰富,维生素C含量甚高。据测定,果肉含糖3%左右,每100克果肉含维生素C200~1814毫克。鲜食先酸后甜,余味无穷,风味独特,并有止渴化痰之功效。余甘果实还可腌渍佐食或加工成高级密饯。据有关资料报道,余甘树皮可提制烤胶,种子可以榨油,树根有收敛止泻作用,叶可以防治皮炎、湿疹。余甘内含物有降低人体胆固醇之作用。在印度,它是出血、痢疾、贫血和咳嗽等症的传统药品,此外,余甘子可提取丹宁、生物碱、炎黄酮、奎宁,类固醇和类萜。
