目前所使用的光源,有效照射距离很短;例如,一只手电筒只能照清几百米内的目标,一盏近代的防空探照灯的有效照射距离也只有20公里左右。再远呢,普通使用的光源就无能为力了,只有借助于微波辐射。微波不是光,而是一种无线电波,波长在二三十厘米以下。现代的雷达就是用的这种波。一般能够探测出几百公里以外的目标。然而现代科学要求探测的目标却比这要远得多。近年来莱塞的出现,在这方面开辟了光辉的远景。
Currently, the light source used has a short effective radiation distance; for example, a flashlight can only clear the target within a few hundred meters, and the effective radiation distance of a modern air-defense searchlight is only about 20 kilometers. Farther away, the commonly used light source is powerless, with the help of microwave radiation. Microwave is not light, but a kind of radio wave, with a wavelength less than twenty or thirty centimeters. Modern radars use this wave. It is generally able to detect targets hundreds of kilometers away. However, modern science requires that the target of exploration be far more than this.
