The people of South Africa gained independence, and the colonial relations between white and black people underwent major changes. The blacks, from former slaves to rulers of today, are neglected by the whites of today and become the rest of the Negroes. This change places whites in despair, they no longer have the privilege and are no longer protected. After the apartheid period, the reality of a harsh living environment led them to realize that their prerogatives, even basic human rights, have been denied and face an identity crisis. John Maxwell Coetzee’s famous novel “Shame” depicts the situation of apartheid in South Africa. The novel mainly describes the shame of South African white people after losing their sovereignty in the new era, showing Coetzee’s attitude towards white living and the basic situation of South Africa The right to life concerns.
