认定阿诺德是借《多佛海滩》倾泻悲情,可以说是形成了一种思维定式。如果我们细细揣摩《多佛海滩》的两组中心意象,即“海潮”意象和“夜战”意象并顺势挖出其背后的文化命题,就不会简单地给阿诺德贴上“绝望”的标签。在潮涨潮落的节奏中,我们可以听到对如下文化命题的追问:什么是进步?什么是幸福?什么叫有质量的生活?诗中“夜战”意象的含义也必须放在文化批评的语境中来审视,必须结合“海潮”意象来审视,还必须结合该诗与阿诺德其他作品的互文关系来审视。
