The early epistolary novel “Mrs. Susan”, which was not published before Jane Austen’s lifetime, is very helpful in understanding the art of Austen’s novels, but the works are rarely known in the country and few are commented. This thesis attempts to start with the narrative characteristics of the epistle from the perspective of narratology and compare it with Pride and Prejudice, revealing that the author in the epistolary disclaims the direct intervention of the text as an omniscient narrator, Multi-narrator, multi-perspective, multi-narrative voice, how to transition to later mature modern novel narrative mode. This article not only attempts to open the domestic concern and study of Austin’s epistolary novel “Mrs. Susan”, but also tries to deepen the understanding of the important part of the development and maturity of the narrative art of modern novels in the development history of the novel.
