As a major scholar studying modern Chinese literature and culture, I can most accept “Guoxue” in three terms: “national essence”, “national heritage” and “national learning”. But perhaps it is prejudice. I always think that the term “Guoxue” was forced by “Western Learning” and therefore has a strong defensive color and lack of initiative and space for growth.
