Hugo’s two Guerre arx demolisseurs! Presented here are translated from the Hugo Review Collection, published by the Robert Lafayette in 1985 in France. According to the original editor’s note, the first was written in 1825, and in 1832 was improperly published in a popular book and a magazine. The second was written in 1832 and published in the “Two Worlds Comments” on March 1 of the same year. In France, the dismantling of ancient buildings due to the development of municipal construction was, at least since 1819, of real significance, because at that time there was an opinion (represented by Paul Louis-Gurion) that the “industrial Development should not be limited by respect for past monuments that memorialize evil and superstition. ”(“ Fifth Letter to Critics ”). Hugo’s article is a fierce criticism of this opinion. From today’s point of view, what he expressed in this article is quite “green spirit”, nor do we have any reference to how to solve the problems of economic development and cultural preservation in our modernization.
