The five-star Grand Hotel Beijing is an ideal place to enjoy the charm of Chinese royalty as well as ancient Eastern culture.
Chinese Elements
On top of Tian’anmen Square, the memorial arch in front of Grand Hotel might be the most eye-catching construction on Chang’an Avenue. Different from arches in other places in China or in overseas Chinatowns, this memorial arch with its dragon and phoenix drawings signals an elegance worthy of emperors.
The hotel is superbly located within the red wall to the east of the Forbidden City and nestled among numerous places of interest such as Tian’anmen Square, Wangfujing shopping street, Beihai Park and so on.
However, all the luxury and majesty of the hotel is eclipsed by the huge Snow Mountain painting by Wu Guanzhong, one of China’s great masters. The picture functions in tune with the Fengshui guideline that a front gate should not open to a street; in cases where that is necessary, a screen wall should be erected to shield a direct view from the street.
Decor in the lobby to the right of the screen wall also profoundly embodiesChinese culture, and details that reveal its refinement can be found in every corner. Besides the monumental ivory carving, the jade carving Group Immortals Praying for Longevity, and the auspicious animals and plants carved or painted on the ceiling, walls and lights, not only enrich the hotel environment, but also express the best wishes to the guests.
The Red Wall Café on the second floor gets its name from its location next to the red wall of the former imperial city. The restaurant enjoys an excellent reputation for its tasteful decor, tranquil atmosphere and delicious food.
One will be surprised to see an indoor garden when goes to the third floor. The design is based on the old Summer Palace. In the evening, you can enjoy live chamber music while having a drink in the arbor.
On the 10th floor, you find a grand hall that looks like the empress’ room in the Forbidden City. Zijin Hall is the best place to get a full view of the Palace Museum and Tian’anmen Square, especially to enjoy the beautiful sunset shining on the ancient buildings. It is a perfect place to hold wedding ceremony, with the solemn backdrop of golden bricks and red walls.
Experience Royalty
Living in the only five-star hotel adjacent to the imperial city, one is bound to enjoy a unique experience.
Decorations in the Presidential suite include a crystal chandelier, iron folding screen and copper candlesticks, all in European style. Those in the Emperor’s suite are in Chinese traditional imperial style.
The Emperor’s suite, a duplex containing two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms upstairs and a living room and dining room downstairs, is a miniature of imperial quarters. Ornaments of gold and jade, paintings with dragon and phoenix images, along with fabrics in bright yellow (the color reserved for the emperor), give the rooms a feeling of imperial elegance.
Many state leaders and distinguished personages have chosen to stay in the Grand Hotel during their visit to Beijing, including former British PM Margaret Thatcher, former German PM Helmut Kohl, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Japanese PM Toshiki Kaifu, former president of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch and actor Mel Gibson.
As a hotel representative of traditional Chinese style, the Grand Hotel attaches importance to showcasing Chinese culture and history. Through the wooden furniture in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the exquisite papercuts, embroideries, ancient calligraphy and paintings, guests are in intimate company with Chinese culture and spirit.
Personalized Service
Apart from sumptuous food, gorgeous decor and impeccable facilities, the Grand Hotel honors its guests’ inherent nobility with excellent and considerate service.
According to the hotel’s PR manager Zhao Peipei, the hotel’s reputation for quality rests on great efforts made by both management and staff, but it is an inside job. The hotel has no special publicity goals with respect to its guests’ satisfaction; the repeat stays or returning guests and their word of mouth advocacy show the guests’ acknowledgments of the hotel’s standards.
The good service at the Grand Hotel always surprises and delights. The restaurant manager greets his diners respectfully before every meal, and waiters advise on orders according to the guest’s tastes and preferences. What’s more, they commit to memory every regular guest’s eating and drinking habits.
Naturally enough, the hotel is famous for its imperial cuisine, such as abalone and sea cucumbers. Using the best natural ingredients and fastidious preparation techniques, imperial cuisine is not only tasty, but also preserves the tradition and culture of royalty. The dishes, as with everything else, are deeply appreciated by guests.
