Maugham describes in Veil a pair of betrayals, reprisals and punishments suffered by men and women in discordant marriages. Among them, the hero, Walter, who was betrayed by his wife but who occupied the moral high ground early in his life, died while selflessly helping the cholera patient. And the weak morality, light skinned wife Katie has grown in the disaster, wake up, get a new life. At first glance, this setting violates the traditional morality of “good and evil”. However, in the writings of Maugham, the characterization has already surpassed the simple ethics framework. The subtle complexity of human nature and the difficulty of interweaving the good and the evil are the true charm of the work.
