Nitric oxide, as a gaseous messenger, participates in the information transmission between nerve cells in the nervous system and plays an important role in brain development, learning and memory. This study investigated the effects of dietary zinc deficiency on nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity and cGMP levels in the cerebellum, striatum and hypothalamus of developing mice. The results showed that NOS activity in cerebellum, striatum and hypothalamus and cGMP levels showed a trend of increased development. The activity of NOS in cerebellum, striatum and hypothalamus of zinc deficient rats of all ages were significantly lower than that of the normal control group. The levels of cGMP in the cerebellum, striatum and hypothalamus of the zinc deficient rats at 21 and 30 days were significantly lower than that of the free Feeding groups, impaired NMDA receptor-NO-cGMP pathway during zinc deficiency, may be an important mechanism by which zinc deficiency affects brain development and function.
