早在耶鲁大学读书期间,容闳的心中就已萌发科教兴国思想。毕业后经过十余年的努力,容闳科教兴国思想的第一步——幼童赴美留学计划终于实现。虽然容闳的留美教育计划中途夭折,但他提出的科教兴国思想产生的历史影响十分深远。容闳也非常重视在国内大力兴办教育,在他的影响下,广大爱国华侨纷纷回国捐资兴学,发展教育事业,有力促进了侨乡的经济发展和社会进步。
