按照定义,动物药品是指用于预防、治疗、诊断动物疾病,有目的地调节其生理机能并规定作用、用途、用法、用量的物质。从动物药品的生产和经营企业来看,动物药品业经过近三十年的发展,基本走向成熟,使得动物药品行业从营销研发到机制和资本经营都迈上了一个全新的台阶,已成为大畜牧业的一个辅助产业,并随着畜牧业的不断发展而兴旺。一方面,就生产者而言,动物药品结构日趋合理,人们已经意识到发展绿色动物药品不单是开发一类特殊产品,而是通过产品质量控制,建立和发展一种新的生产方式。就经营企业而言,人们经营绿色动物药品不是为了追求“时髦”,而是明确了企业的自身定位。就消费者而言,最初大多数的消费者对绿色兽药的涵义不了解,错把绿色动物药品看成是绿颜色的产品,目前人们对绿色动物药品的理解和关注进一步加强,尤其对疗效、残留、毒副反应的关注度与认知度超过以往任何时候。据不完全统计,我国现有动物药品生产企业2200多家,产品品种与规格达2000多种,年产值超过150亿元人民币;约有经营企业50000多家,年销售额170亿元人民币。随着2005年12月31日的临近,估计将有1500家的兽药生产企业被市场淘汰出局,加之人们生活水平的进一步改善和提高,绿色安全动物药品的研发、生产、经营和使用,以GMP的实施作为基础,以“绿色安全”为突破口,以“保护动物健康,保护人类健康,保障畜禽产品健康”为终极目标,已经成为大畜牧业发展的一种价值取向。现有的企业和从业者将会面临一次前所未有的生存压力,但我们深信中国动物药品业将是一片崭新的天空。
