The recent surge in the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the European currencies has made Europeans and of course the Germans’ hot topics. Bonn newspapers often use the “fanged exchange rate volatility” to describe the changes in the dollar market. The movement of the exchange rate between the two currencies is based on the purchasing power of the two currencies. West Germany’s inflation rate is among the lowest in Western countries. Mark’s purchasing power has been stable. However, Mark’s ratio to the U.S. dollar has dropped by 84 percent in the past two years. To ordinary Germans, this is incredible. A real estate agent said indignantly: “One dollar up to 2.5 mark.”
