一 為什么要改革我們的文字? 我們現在用的漢字是各種筆画構成的。這些筆画的長短和形狀各有不同,分析超來有幾十種。它們的排列次序或筆順可以從左到右如「人」字;可以從當中開始,然後從左到右如「小」字;可以從左到右,從上到下,最後在當中收笔如「中」字。事实上很多字的筆順都是復雜的。由於汉字筆畫的長短和形狀各有不同,筆顺复雜,在學習上和使用上給我們帶來很多的困難。第一、學習漢字要每個字学,包括它的形狀、读音和意义,因而學會两三千字就要费很多的時間和精力。第二、無論用部首,筆畫或者號碼,在字典和電話簿里檢查字,郡是很麻烦的。這樣就使编目錄和索引遇到很大的困難。第三、打字和排印书報那是很不方便的。第四、打電報要经過從號碼翻譯為汉字。拼音文字就不同。学習拼音文字只要学會二十幾個到三十多個字母的讀音和拼寫方法,就能够在這個基礎上学習把要讲的話拼寫出來並學習阅读。其次,由於字母的拼寫方法比較简单,數量不多,並且排列的次序都是從左到右的。在書寫、排印、查詞典、打電報、編索引等等方面都比漢字方便得多了。这就是為什么我們要改用拼音文字。祁建華速成識字法利用注音字母可以突擊学習漢字,這證明了字母能够使文字与读者结合,從而加速学習文字的速度。我们要用注音字母做識字拐棍;假使我們的文字是拼音的,那就用不着这個拐棍了。那么,为什么我們不改用拼音文字呢? 二文字改革是怎么一回事? 文字是语言的記录。文字改革是記录语言的改革。我們是用汉字來記錄汉 Why should we reform our writing?
