The classical boundary solution is to use the influence function to establish the equation, which is called boundary integral method in the literature. The boundary element method, like the finite element method, uses a trial function to discretize. The difference is the criteria for selecting such functions. The boundary element method requires that the selected trial function not only satisfies the control equation, but also satisfies the boundary conditions, while the finite element method does not require to satisfy the control equation, as long as it can satisfy the boundary conditions. Then the latter is to be determined in the entire domain, while the former is only used to solve the elements on the boundary of the domain to solve the problem.
