1. INTRODUCTION This paper discusses the brittle fracture susceptibility of working parts of high-speed wire tapers used in tool manufacture. This brittle fracture sensitivity leads to scrap due to cracks and fractures in the teeth and shank of the tap. Tap is made of two high-speed steel, namely Cr-W-V RP3 (S18-0-1) and RP6 (S6-5-3). The tap handle is made of structural steel OLC45 (SAE315). The chemical composition of the three types of steel are listed in Table 1.
