对当代社会生活的各个方面都有很大影响的美国心理学家和哲学家亚布拉罕·哈罗德·马斯洛,在他1954年出版的《动机与个性》一书中说到:“一位音乐家必须创作乐曲,一位画家必须作画,一位诗人必须写作,不然他就安静不下来。人必须尽其所能。这一需要我们可以称之为自我实现。”马斯洛所说的这种“自我实现”的需要,在几乎每一个作家、艺术家的生活和创作实践中都已经得到了证明。二十世纪最伟大的画家巴勃罗·毕加索就大声疾呼:“我不把全部时间献给艺术,我就不能活。”英国著名作家格雷厄姆·格林说:
