Chen Jiannan: A Cultural Envoy in Egypt
By Xu Zhongyou
“Culture is the quintessence of a nation, and is the soft power of a country. The importance of further enhancing international cultural exchange can never be overestimated.” This is what Chen Jiannan, Chair of the Egyptian branch of the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification, said at the 11th session of the 11th Zhejiang CPPCC Conference held on January 16, 2017. His speech at the session won hearty applauses. On the afternoon of January 17, Cultural Dialogue sat down with him to talk about his life stories, dreams and much more besides.
A visit to Egypt in 2000 opened the eyes of Chen Jiannan, who was then a resident of Czech Republic. He was enchanted by the country’s charming cultural density and the mesmerizing scenery of the Nile the moment the plane touched down.
In 2001, the Wenzhou native was elected chair of the Chinese Association in Egypt. The launch of the organization was soon followed by that of the Egyptian branch of the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification, chaired also by Chen Jiannan. The five-star red flag fluttering on the rooftop of the headquarters building that houses the two organizations is “a strong reminder of the national pride of all Chinese people in Egypt”. “The flag fills in me with energy and confidence, and the warmth of hometown whenever I feel upset, lonely and lost in the foreign land,” says Chen Jiannan.
Over the years, the two organizations spared no effort to enhance the national pride of all Chinese people in Egypt and promote cultural communication between Egypt and its Chinese community.
On September 24, 2011, the two organizations unveiled a symposium in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Revolution of 1911, which was a landmark event in the modern history of China.
The gathering drew a dozen heavyweight figures from the Chinese ‘club’ of Egypt. Participants included Song Aiguo, the Chinese ambassador to Egypt, Li Xin, chair of the Chinese Students and Scholars League in Egypt, and Li Xinxin, chair of the Chinese Women Association in Egypt.
The activities drew the attention of a dozen major media groups in Egypt, whose coverage brought the Egyptian public closer to the history of China.
The Chinese community in Egypt now includes more than 20,000 people working and studying in Egypt, some of which enjoy residency rights. However, many Chinese people there have difficulty sending their children to local schools. Even for those who can, the children do not get a chance to study the Chinese language at school.
Such an education dilemma has been partly solved by the launch of Deren School, the result of the joint effort of the two organizations chaired by Chen. The school’s six classes and nine teachers now serve about 100 students, most of which are from the Chinese immigrants. The curriculum of the school ensures a high quality education and lots of Chinese elements for all students.
The Chinese Association has also launched a website, a bimonthly magazine and a weekly newspaper to encourage cultural exchange and mutual understanding. The organization’s contribution to the cultural dialogue between the two countries also includes Life and Work in Egypt, a survival guide for Chinese newcomers to adapt to the new life in Egypt, and lots of lectures held throughout the year.
Chen is also working on a major book project that works to summarize the 1,000-year-long cultural and trade communication between China and Egypt.
As a highly respected figure in the Chinese community in Egypt, Chen Jiannan played an active role in the reception and activity organization for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Egypt in 2016 in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the two countries’ diplomatic relation, with the story featured in the international channel of CCTV and by several other major media groups.
